THE POWER SUIT

blk suit 1 blk white suit skirt jacket suit

Today’s business arena is much more competitive and demanding than it was years ago. Knowing the industry’s requirements and how to market oneself is imperative. The amount of people with the same education and skill set is much greater therefore the competition more fierce.

The way we look and present ourself will affect the way we are treated. So we should consider our wardrobe as an investment for a maximum return.

The way we dress reveals a lot about our beliefs and our self esteem. We should dress according to our goals.  Looking for a new job? A promotion?  The perfect suit  will get you there.

Knowing our style and body type is essential.

The business attire should:

  • Identify what we do, when possible
  • Establish our authority
  • Reveal our level of success

Select a skirt or pant suit in a neutral color or small pattern. When we do not have an extensive wardrobe, a skirt or pant will be more versatile than a dress suit.

  • The skirt should be at knee level or just above and comfortable when seated.
  • For a more professional look, wear sheer color hose
  • Comfortable and conservative shoes are a must. Open toed shoes should be avoided in a formal environment
  • Fragrance should be limited as not everyone appreciates the aroma
  • Wear conservative jewelry to avoid distraction
  • It is important to be true to our personality. We can look professional and credible without looking severe.

For a more casual or creative environment,  bolder patterns or brighter colors can be worn.

HOW TO TRAVEL LIGHT

How to travel light with everything we need.

When planning a trip, our TO DO list is already so long. Packing is just ONE MORE  thing  to do! Are you one of those people who tries to jam their entire closet in one suitcase? Sits on the luggage  to close it? or do you bring 6 suitcases for a 2 week car trip?

Years ago I remember going on a business trip abroad and realizing upon arrival that I had hung my jackets on the back of my bedroom door. I did not have one complete business suit. Things are easily forgotten if you do not take the time to plan it out.

WEATHER FORECAST

Always check the weather forecast. There is nothing worse than packing for the wrong season and not being comfortable.

“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” While this was attributed to Mark Twain, the source of these words is unknown. Due to the fog, the summers are chilly in San Francisco. Not knowing this would make the stay miserable so it is important to check the weather prior to traveling.

ITINERARY AND ACTIVITIES

Check with family and friends or business associates what activities are planned. How many dinners, outings, will you be going to the museum, baby-sitting, shopping, sporting events, business meetings etc… It is much easier to plan when you know your needs.

MAKE A LAYOUT

I am a woman of lists and plans. I just can’t live without. Make a travel packing list of everything you need to cover all the activities. Build a clothing capsule, 8 to 15 items that  can be mixed and matched.  Bring breathable and wrinkle-free fabrics, as much as possible. Select a neutral color as a basis for the capsule. Each item should be worn at least 3 times. This capsule was done with 8 clothing pieces and with a neutral color of navy for a one week trip.

Slide1 Slide1

Items that will not be put in the clothing capsule:

  • Consider the work out gear separately with a change in easy overnight wash & dry fabrics
  • One travel outfit that  will be worn to and from the destination.Travel with your bulky items on and wear garments that can be layered for comfort.
  • A cross body bag is the best solution for travel as it  hands free
  • A small clutch for evening
  • Sleepwear/Loungewear
  • Undergarments

Always pack the heaviest items on the bottom of the suitcase. Roll all tank tops and tee shirts and place tissue paper or plastic bags between items to avoid wrinkles.

Try the formula on your next trip, you will be amazed. I would love to hear your comments.

WHAT TO WEAR TO WORK

Can stock 2

When companies hire an employee or select a business partner, they make a large investment. They need to see that the partner can represent the company and share it’s core values appropriately. Herewith are a few ways to remain credible and professional.

TO DO

  1. Consider the industry’s dress code. Every industry has one. Being oblivious to the requirements is a lack of respect to others. Yes, the rules do apply to everyone.
  2. Dress with quality items. This is a general wardrobe rule. We should always purchase the best quality we can afford. It is not necessary to have an extensive wardrobe. We just need quality items and fabrics that can be mixed and matched with other garments of the wardrobe for maximum options.
  3. “Comfort” is overrated! I have seen so many people wear inappropriate garments because they placed comfort above all. Well, here’s a scoop, we can have an elegant business like wardrobe that is comfortable. Comfort is not synonymous to unattractive.
  4. Limit the jewelry. The gypsy look is not one to be looking for. Choose quality over quantity.
  5. Have a consistent Image. It is often tempting to experience different styles but keep the creativity for the weekend. Some years ago I worked in the advertising industry with a woman who liked to change wigs every other day. Interestingly enough, her personality would change along with the wig. It was very confusing for everyone.
  6. Grooming is important. We all lead very busy lives but we can find time to touch up those roots and have our nails done.
  7. Posture – We spend a great deal of time hovering over our computers and we develop a bad posture. Well it is time to “Suck it in” and stand up straight! Posture speaks volumes about our self esteem and we would not want to give a wrong impression. Clothes also look much better when we are standing up straight.

DON’T

  1. Don’t show too much skin. There is a place and time for this and it is not the office. Cleavage should be covered and skirt hems conservative. The focus is business and not our different body parts.
  2. Limit the makeup & remain conservative. It is not fashionable, nor appropriate and it tends to make us look much older than we are. Don’t hesitate to ask makeup artists from  dept store cosmetic counters. They are always  happy to show us how we can enhance our best features.

CONFUSED ABOUT BUSINESS CASUAL?

Confused about Business Casual? Quite understandable.

canstockphoto11256718

In the USA, business casual originally began in the late 1950′s with a following of only a few companies. In the late 1970′s, Casual Friday became a weekly event. This trend was later confirmed with the .com era. Today, we have chaos as nobody really understands Business Casual and it’s rules.

Business Casual does not mean sloppy weekend wear, it is merely a more relaxed way of wearing formal business attire. It should also never apply to attitude, respect or manners.

Casual is usually untailored, unstructured with lighter colors and no collar.

Business casual on the other hand has structured lines, is tailored, has a strong contrast of dark and light colors and includes a collar.

One thing to keep in mind is that if we can wear it to the beach, the club or at home, then it is not appropriate for the office. Above is a brown business suit and the proper way to wear business casual, a cotton skirt paired with a knit top and cardigan. This casual outfit can be worn to the office, the PTA meeting or a professional networking meeting. For the weekend, just add flats, a tee shirt and denim jacket to this casual look.

The wrong way of wearing casual The right way

Every industry has a dress code. Some are more casual than others. For a creative industry, advertising or fashion, we can be more trendy except at sales or executive level. Then the power suit is expected.

The finance, insurance and legal industries have always been more conservative.

If your company’s dress code REALLY allows denim then choose a dark wash in a style that fits your body type.  Jeggings, embellishments and low rise are not options, keep it classic. Denim paired with a silk blouse and a blazer will be elegant and attractive. A neutral color blazer is a wardrobe staple. Whatever you wear, you still need to show your credibility and professionalism.

Fit is essential. It is always recommended to go up a size and have it altered for a perfect fit.

  • Trousers should be fitted, not baggy or tight
  • The skirts should not be binding, at knee level or just above
  • We should always be able to close our jacket comfortably (and not let those buttons pop)

DILLARDS  is a great place to find everything one needs to build a wardrobe, from suits of all styles to business casual wear.

It is important to think about the message your appearance is giving.

SUIT YOURSELF

Looking for a job is a stressful time in our life. We also dread the interview process so why not put all the advantages on our side.

Whether it is in our professional or personal life, our Image is the calling card to success.

Did you know that only 7% of communication is verbal? In just a few seconds, assumptions are made about us, our educational level, social status, level of success and much more. These assumptions are made primarily from our appearance, attitude and the way we present and carry ourselves.

When looking for a job, it is wise to do the research on the industry, the company and it’s dress code prior to the interview. Some industries are more casual than others. Dressing appropriately for your industry will give you the edge and an advantage over the competition.

The way we look always affects the way we are treated.

For the interview, I  suggest a business suit. A suit sets the tone and gives a serious and professional look.  Select one that fits your body type and  in which you are comfortable. It is always noticeable when someone is not comfortable in their clothes. “When you feel your best, you look your best and do your best. Select a neutral color that complements your skin tone.

You must be thinking, my industry is much too casual for a suit. Wrong! A suit is the interview essential. Choose something that enables you to use each separate piece with items you already have in your wardrobe and you will have a polished business casual look.

DILLARDS has a large variety of business suits and separates, all one needs for a polished business look.

(above, Tahari Navy blue suit, Bright pink silk blouse and Black pin stripe suit, sleeveless printed blouse)

Color: These are general guidelines that can differ depending on the industry and situation. As you know color triggers unconscious reactions for example red releases passion. The right color choice will increase your chances at the interview. I would suggest a navy or charcoal grey suit. They both indicate authority, being trustworthy and honest. Chocolate brown is also a good choice as it reveals serenity and calm.

An all black suit is not recommended for interviews as one can appear distant and arrogant. If wearing black, brighten it up with a light color top or scarf near your face.

I hope these few tips will help you prepare for your next interview. The way you dress sends a clear message about your brand and what it has to offer.

HOLIDAY PARTY DRESS CODE FOR MEN

BROOKSBROTHERS

I was recently asked what a gentleman  should wear at the office Holiday Party.  I would say it really depends where this party is being held and the industry.

When working in a Financial or Corporate setting and wearing a suit daily;

  • If the party is held in a formal setting, dinner in a restaurant, I suggest wearing a dark suit, charcoal, black or navy with a tie. If very formal and a tux is required, you will be notified in advance or by invitation.
  • If the party is taking place at the office and you do not have time to go home to change, bring a fresh crisp shirt to change before the party. Don’t forget to freshen up with a quick shave.

You don’t necessarily wear a suit on a daily basis and your industry is more casual. Remember, you may be having a drink with the President or CEO of the company. This is an opportunity to show your professionalism and that you  represent the company appropriately.

  • I suggest wearing your trousers or dark pair of denim jeans (if it is REALLY Company Culture) with a crisp shirt and blazer. All men should own a great fitting blazer. It is an important investment to make as you can wear it with jeans or dress pants in a business or social setting. Fit is the number one criteria and you should always buy the best quality you can afford.
  • Wearing a tie always makes it more businesslike so why not make an effort for the yearly Holiday party. A tie is the accessory that will show off your personality. Please avoid the seasonal designs with Santas and Christmas trees. You need to look professional and elegant.
  • Shoes should be shined and impeccable. Keep your tennis shoes for the gym.

Many companies have suffered economically. The Holiday party is a way to thank the employees for their efforts and sacrifices during the year. Although you should have fun and “loosen” up, avoid any situation that will be talked about until “Next Year’s” Party!

Dump Your Scale

Many of us start our day by stepping on the scale. It doesn’t matter that we know muscle weighs more than fat and how hydrated you are will show up on the scale… we still have to know.

It can be a thrill to find out you lost weight and a depressing experience to find out you gained. We do it thinking it will help us to stay “in control” if we know what the numbers are… “numbers don’t lie.”

Unfortunately, weighing can backfire. Instead of taking you closer to your weight goals, it may make it even harder to transform your body. Here’s how:

  1. Increased stress throughout the day. When you step on the scale you start your day with worry. Even when you see you have lost or maintained your weight, you will continue to worry about what you eat all day long. This worry translates to STRESS. And plenty of studies have shown that increased stress leads to weight gain or difficulty in losing weight.
  1. Deciding to avoid the “bad” foods for the day will make you want them more. Ahhh, forbidden fruit. The minute you tell yourself “not allowed” the chocolate, and the chips will look that much more delicious and it will be that much more difficult to resist them.
  1. If you have gained weight you may feel more depressed and down on yourself. Feeling bad can compels you to seek comfort, right where you’re used to finding solace… with more food.

Ask yourself these questions:

Have you gained weight at a time you were weighing?

Have you lost weight at a time you were weighing?

Chances are the answer is “yes”. Therefore you can conclude that weighing yourself regularly DOES NOT help you to lose weight.

If you regularly worry about your weight, dispose of your scale pronto.

You’re still going to know if you have gained or lost a significant amount of weight because you will FEEL differently and your clothes will fit differently.

Yes, it is possible to weigh without getting triggered into a “Oh my gosh I have to diet! I’m getting so fat!” spell where you plunge into the next quick fix meal replacement, shake, or other extreme measure.

But, until you can say that you genuinely and unconditionally LOVE your body, it’s best just to dump the scale for now, and maybe forever.

JCBC FITNESS 6 WEEK WEIGHT LOST COMPETITION

weight loss image

JCBC Fitness  6 Week Weight Loss Competition started on April 9th with the goal to learn how to eat more whole foods, stay away from processed foods and weight loss products.

We started with 22 participants and ended with 17 while still losing a TOTAL of 93.5 pounds!!  We integrated Yoga and Boxing while keeping our Group Personal Training Schedule. Everyone really enjoyed the variety that all the classes provided. Some of the ladies chose to add exercise outside of the class from swimming, walking and riding bikes. They were free to incorporate whatever they felt would benefit them.

JCBC Fitness offered a 6 Week Meal Plan that a few clients took advantage of. This was not a requirement to be able to participate in the Competition. The main goal was that over the 6 weeks Clients would realize what balance of food works for them.

JCBC Fitness believes in a slow weight loss plan for real change. No laxatives or fat loss pills were allowed and supplementing with protein powder was only allowed once a week. It is important that we eat whole foods and not rely on outside sources for the goals we want to reach. We are so proud of each participant and their success. Everyone learned something about themselves during this time and made changes on their plate for the better.
